At the beginning of the 80s, the idea came up: "We could build a car!" In 1985, the time had come. I visited the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt. The MERLIN particularly caught my eye there. After some discussions with the then importer "Jürgen MOHR" and a test drive in Straubenhardt (dealer's headquarters), the kit and other necessary parts were ordered in October 1985. Delivery date: December 1985: December 1985, as it was to be a winter job!
After countless phone calls with the importer, I was assured in February 1986:
the kit and all ordered parts can be picked up. After I had picked up most of the parts in March, we finally got started. "That was the beginning".
The basis was the FORD Taunus 2.0l 90 hp V6 cylinder, which could be purchased cheaply at the time.
was. Two engines were purchased, even though the engine is considered indestructible.
A friend's empty garage served as the workshop. The friend, who had trained as a car mechanic in a previous life, and I worked and improvised like world champions until the Merlin received its MOT approval in October 1986 without any complaints.
What began with many individual parts became, after countless hours, a dark blue
Roadster, a Merlin Plus 2.
It has now travelled approx. 80,000 km with virtually no breakdowns. In the course of time it has been
further modified, the usual wearing parts replaced. Oil change, brakes, technical check etc. Extras included a new water pump and batteries,
Shock absorber, valve cover gasket, drive shaft, contactless ignition, tarpaulin,
Bathroom bar, fire extinguisher, odds and ends. It was given a general overhaul in the winter of 2006/2007.
It was disassembled, cleaned, oiled, greased, repainted and reassembled.
It was fitted with spoked rims, a new interior panelling and other new parts.
Over the past 29 years, he has given us a lot of fun and pleasure.
We hope to be able to enjoy many more kilometres of sun and wind with the Merlin.
