.... a hot tour ....
...Pack your swimming trunks, take your little sister
And then it's off to Wannsee...
We packed a pair of shorts, sun cream and the Merlins and headed off to the Hotel Maurer in Saarwellingen, the meeting point for this year's tour.
It was four sunny and warm days, the best convertible weather. Sun cream was used frequently - soft tops were never used. As always, we were very happy to see each other again, and we were able to welcome new Merlin friends, even a Merlin had travelled from Belgium.
After a sumptuous dinner, everyone sat together for a long time and looked forward to the next few days.
On Friday, 13 Merlins set off at half past nine in the direction of "THE" attraction in Saarland, the Saarschleife. The view from up there is really impressive. We were even allowed to drive up to the information centre and were a very popular photo opportunity. After a number of questions about our Merlins, we continued along the beautiful roads to the brewery at the marina for lunch.
But the order for a "children's plate" went completely wrong....I can't bring a children's plate, but I can bring a senior citizen's plate .....
Well fortified, we then went on to visit a fully preserved fortification in the Westwall. The bunker was open to visitors and although it was pleasantly cool inside, there was still a certain sense of trepidation. We continued on great roads, quickly getting warm again, to Hofgut Dösterhof. After coffee, cake and cool drinks, we drove back to the hotel. We ordered something to eat at the Italian restaurant and it was another long evening.
Note: After five minutes of driving we had lost the first one at the roundabout...
One every five minutes, so after an hour there would have been only one vehicle left. At the Saarschleife, however, he joined them again.
The start on Saturday was again at half past nine, even on time, just like Friday. Today we were even 15 Merlins, as two Saarland Merlins could only be there on this day.
We travelled along the beautiful Saarland roads to visit a Celtic village. It took a bit of imagination to immerse yourself in life there. After one of the tour participants, names withheld, extensively tested the bed and some tools, we continued on to the Schaumbergalm for a lunch break. The Schaumberg, with an altitude of 569 metres, is Saarland's local mountain. Our Bavarian friends just laugh..... In the alpine hut, which had been prepared just like an alpine hut in the mountains (again our Bavarian participants laugh), we had a hearty lunch. The observation tower was even opened for us and anyone who wanted to could take a lift up and enjoy the breathtaking view. We then headed back to the hotel. We were all happy to enjoy a cold drink under parasols. Even with the wind, it was still very warm. We went to the Adler for dinner, where a generous and delicious buffet awaited us. After the meal, we played a quiz with Saarland questions and it was quite entertaining.
There is still speculation as to why the most successful participants came from Bavaria. We will certainly take up the idea.
On Sunday we said goodbye after breakfast as usual... see you next year!
All participants arrived home without any problems after a short or long journey.
Weather excellent, food plentiful and good, plenty to drink, no breakdowns, great routes - a tour couldn't be better.
Dear Heike, dear Christian - many, many thanks for the excellent planning and realisation of this tour, you can't do much better than that!
